The Permit

Permit

These coastal fish inhabit tropical grass and sand flats, near reefs and wrecks. Permit have a specialized plate at the back of their mouth that helps them crush hard-shelled animals such as clams and crabs. Anglers cast live crabs to schools of permit hoping to catch one of these line-stripping fish, which also take shrimp, clams and occasionally small fish. Permit are most common in south Florida. This member of the jack family can reach 40 inches and 50 pounds, but most are about 25-pounds.

Florida Record:

56 lb 2 oz, caught near Ft. Lauderdale

The permit is indeed the prince of the flats, the pinnacle for flats fisherman willing to take on the ultimate challenge. This is a game of teamwork between guide and angler, and even with flawless execution the permit will many times refuse to take the bait, fly or lure tossed at it. In Biscayne Bay, I sight fish for permit on the flats ranging between 2’-6’ of water using spinning gear and a live blue crab on a circle hook. For the fly fisherman, I use a 9wt to 10wt fly rod, a 12’ tapered leader and a heavy crab imitation fly. Strong tides and a grassy bottom are ideal for permit as this allows them to feed better over the food rich grass beds. If you’re ready to test your angling skills against the toughest fish on the flats, give me a call today and feel your heart race as you see that big permit coming right at you!
