The Bait

Live bait offers the best opportunity at catching the greatest number of fish in Miami’s Biscayne Bay.  Below are the top live baits I use when fishing the flats.

ShrimpShrimp

All fish species in Biscayne Bay forage on shrimp year ‘round.  The largest shrimp of the year use the strong spring tides of winter to leave the bay and head out into open ocean.  During this time, night time tarpon fishing along bridges can be spectacular as your freelined shrimp is engulfed by 100lb silver monsters! Other fish species that feed on shrimp are trout, snapper, grouper, bonefish, permit, snook, mackerel, bluefish and redfish.

Crab

Blue crabs are a popular bait for bonefish, tarpon, permit and redfish and any angler worth their tackle will have at least a half dozen live crabs of varying sizes in their live well.  Blue crabs are wild caught crabs who have been declawed and sold at local tackle shops.

Pilchards

Pilchards are the bait of choice when the target are mackerel, snapper, grouper, snook and bluefish.  Although difficult to locate at times, fall and winter provides the largest number and biggest pilchards of the year.  A free lined pilchard in a chum slick is sure to attract any large predator lurking nearby.

Mullet

Beginning in the fall, the mullet run is the big event in Miami’s Biscayne Bay.  A plethora of game fish feed on these baits with reckless abandon. Often times big tarpon can be seen feeding on schools of mullet in the early morning off South Beach and deep water channels such as the Port of Miami.  It is an exhilarating event to witness 80-100lb tarpon go airborne as they feed on the panicked stricken mullet schools. Usually all it takes to get in the game is to toss a live mullet close to the edge of the mullet schools and hold on for the fight of your life!
