The Gear

Gear With over a dozen fish species available at any time in Biscayne Bay, there are numerous opportunities for my anglers to test their skills.

About 90 percent of the fishing takes place with spinning gear.

Typically 8lb spinning gear is used for bonefish, trout, redfish, mackerel, bluefish, snapper and small tarpon.

Ten pound spinning gear is used for fish such as snook, permit, medium sized tarpon, grouper, larger snapper, barracuda and small to medium sized shark.  This size tackle provides plenty of power to beat these challenging species but allows the angler to test their skill with the lighter line and rods.
For the biggest fish in Biscayne Bay, I use 20lb spinning tackle.  Species where this size tackle is required are big tarpon over 50lbs, big shark and oversized grouper.

Fly Gear:

Most fish species can be subdued in a sporty fashion with 8-9 weight fly tackle.  Ten weight fly tackle is used for medium sized tarpon, permit and snook while 12 weight tackle is typically used for big tarpon during tarpon season (April through June).
